Conan the Barbarian
Plot
Beyond the mists of time, having witnessed the brutal death of his blacksmith father and the massacre of the entire village by the murderous followers of Thulsa Doom, the undead evil wizard and servant of the serpent-god, Set, Conan, the orphaned young Cimmerian, is condemned to a life of slavery. Chained to the perpetual Wheel of Pain, the helpless boy grows into a man, and after years of rigorous training as a fierce gladiator, Conan, now an unstoppable mountain of muscle, regains his precious freedom. But, with the image of the blood-soaked raid etched on his mind, Conan teams up with Subotai, the Hyrkanian thief, and Valeria, the Queen of the Bandits, and embarks on a peril-laden journey to the mysterious Mountain of Power, and the impregnable Snake Cult Temple. Will Conan avenge his parents?
Overall Series Review
Categorical Breakdown
The movie operates on a pure meritocracy; characters are judged by their strength, loyalty, and skill, with no reference to race or social hierarchy. The heroic trio consists of a Cimmerian, a Hyrkanian thief, and a Queen of Bandits, a group whose diverse backgrounds are treated as utterly irrelevant to their competence. The villain, Thulsa Doom, is a powerful man played by a Black actor (James Earl Jones), and the wizard friend is played by an Asian-American actor (Mako), demonstrating a genuinely colorblind casting approach where immutable characteristics are not a narrative focus.
The film’s central conflict is not between a 'Western' and an 'Other' civilization, but between rugged, individualistic barbarism (Conan) and an enslaving, manipulative form of mass-obedience 'civilization' (Thulsa Doom's cult). This critiques corrupt institutions and mass movements, not a specific national or cultural heritage. Conan's home is destroyed by the cult, and his father's 'Riddle of Steel' philosophy is shown to be ultimately incomplete, but his heritage is otherwise framed as a source of self-reliance and strength.
Valeria, the Queen of Thieves, is a warrior equal to Conan in skill, a genuine fighting partner who neither needs rescue nor emasculates the male lead. She is a powerful, independent female character defined by traditionally masculine traits, fitting the 'Girl Boss' trope. However, the film avoids high scores by celebrating a complementary relationship where Conan is highly masculine and her ultimate act of self-sacrifice is one of love and spiritual devotion, not career fulfillment or anti-natalism. The film also contains scenes of female objectification, but these are solely perpetrated by the villains.
The film adheres to a completely normative structure with no elements of alternative sexualities, gender ideology, or deconstruction of the nuclear family being introduced, centered, or lectured about. The only significant romantic and sexual relationship portrayed is the heterosexual bond between Conan and Valeria.
The primary evil force is the Thulsa Doom snake cult, which is a powerful, enslaving religious organization that sacrifices virgins and demands total obedience, positioning organized religion as the root of oppression. Conan's own god, Crom, is described as a distant, uncaring entity, which Conan openly defies. The resolution to the conflict is achieved not through divine intervention or traditional faith, but through Conan's personal vengeance and the spiritual power of his deceased partner's love. The narrative actively promotes a form of individualistic, transcendent-less morality.
