Plot

Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the riddle of the mysterious substance that is causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction... but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

Overall Series Review

Project Hail Mary (2026) stands as a monumental achievement in modern cinema, providing a high-stakes survival story that is completely devoid of contemporary political posturing. The film stays remarkably true to the spirit of the source material by prioritizing problem-solving, scientific curiosity, and the inherent value of life. Ryan Gosling delivers a performance that centers on competence and intellectual courage, while the narrative avoids the common pitfall of mocking its protagonist. By focusing on a universal threat and the bridge-building friendship between two different species, the movie transcends divisive narratives and offers a refreshing vision of human excellence. It is a rare blockbuster that treats its audience with respect, focusing on the awe of discovery rather than the lecture of the week.

Categorical Breakdown

Identity Politics2/10

The film centers on Ryland Grace, a white male lead whose intellect and merit are the keys to saving humanity. Diversity in the cast is portrayed as a natural result of a global crisis requiring the world's best experts, rather than a forced quota or a lecture on systemic issues.

Oikophobia1/10

The narrative is an anthem for the survival of human civilization. It rejects self-hatred by framing the Earth and its inhabitants as a home worth any sacrifice. It avoids common tropes that blame Western industrialization for the solar crisis.

Feminism2/10

Eva Stratt is a powerful and decisive leader, but the film avoids the 'Girl Boss' archetype by giving her human vulnerabilities and a complex relationship with the protagonist. Ryland Grace is not emasculated; his initial fear is a human flaw that serves as the foundation for his eventual heroism.

LGBTQ+1/10

The film contains no references to alternative sexualities or gender ideology. The focus is entirely on the platonic bond between Grace and an alien companion, maintaining a normative and private approach to character identity.

Anti-Theism2/10

While the film is grounded in hard science, it does not mock or vilify religion. The title and the theme of sacrifice suggest a respect for transcendent morality, and the film includes scenes where characters express a belief in a higher power as a source of hope.
