Overall Series Review

Moonrise Kingdom is a stylized, nostalgic look at 1960s New England that prioritizes aesthetics and individual character growth over modern political agendas. The story follows two eccentric children who run away to start a life together, showcasing a pure, albeit quirky, depiction of young love. The film avoids the pitfalls of contemporary social engineering, opting instead for a story about personal belonging, community responsibility, and the transition from childhood to maturity. Its focus on traditional scouts, local law enforcement, and family structures—even when they are flawed—creates a narrative rooted in a specific time and place rather than modern grievance culture.

Categorical Breakdown

Identity Politics1/10

The cast is historically authentic to its mid-1960s New England island setting. Merit and individual skill, such as Khaki Scout training and artistic talent, define the characters. There is no attempt to inject modern intersectional hierarchies or lecture the audience on privilege.

Oikophobia2/10

The film leans heavily into American nostalgia, celebrating mid-century culture, classical music, and traditional scouting. While it portrays some adult authority figures as bumbling or unhappily married, the community ultimately unites to save the children, affirming the value of the home and local institutions.

Feminism2/10

Sam and Suzy operate as a complementary pair. Sam provides protection and survival skills through his scouting background, while Suzy provides emotional depth and intellectual curiosity. The film avoids 'girl boss' tropes, depicting Suzy as a complex child rather than an invincible hero, and it portrays the failure of the central marriage as a tragedy rather than a liberation.

LGBTQ+1/10

The central romance is a traditional boy-girl pairing. The narrative does not include gender ideology or alternative sexualities. The plot focuses on the children's desire to form their own family unit in response to their feelings of isolation.

Anti-Theism2/10

The local church serves as a vital community hub and a literal sanctuary during a storm. A biblical pageant, 'Noye's Fludde,' is a recurring motif that provides a sense of cultural continuity. Religion is treated as a foundational part of the social fabric rather than a source of oppression.
