Overall Series Review
Categorical Breakdown
The entire narrative revolves around the immutable characteristic of gender. The plot’s conflict centers on the girls' subjugated position in society relative to the "superior" male sex. The core premise is a lecture on systemic oppression based on gender hierarchy and social codes within the high school environment.
The film is a direct critique of its own home culture, framing traditional Japanese social codes and school rules as repressive and arbitrarily authoritarian. The empty, sand-filled pool symbolizes the fundamentally corrupt structure that expects women to cater to and clean up after the actions of men.
The movie is explicitly about gender issues, female liberation, and the girls' struggle for gender equality. The young women are empowered to question the rules and structures that seek to confine them. The plot features female characters challenging "gender normative expectations" and being "terrified that her incredibly athletic male classmates will outshine her work."
The narrative includes a character who dreams of performing outside of "gender normative expectations" and the general theme involves challenging gender conformity. However, the primary focus is on social equality and traditional dynamics like crushes and make-up, not centering on alternative sexualities, deconstructing the nuclear family, or gender ideology as the main subject.
The movie is a secular high school drama about gender and social issues. The plot and themes contain no reference to religion, Christianity, or a philosophical critique of objective moral law. The film is neutral on spiritual matters.
